Indian-origin girl's murderToronto, Oct 15 IANS A
man has been jailed for 34 months for his role in the killing of an
Indian-origin
girl four years ago in Brampton on the
city outskirts here. Thirty-one-year-old Navaneethan Kunananthan, of Toronto, was handed down the sentence by a
city court Tuesday for providing a hood to the alleged killer of 20-year-old Amretta Kaur outside her
home. But having spent 10 months under
house arrest, he
will stay in
jail for just two years. The alleged killer, 27-year-old Vijayarajah Manickavasagar, is said to have fled to
Sri Lanka after the
crime. Known as "Bullet", he remains untraced, though an Interpol
alert has been sounded.The
victim, who was training to become a
nurse, was killed after a tiff inside the
famous Calypso Hut 2
nightclub of Brampton where she had gone with her brothers and cousins on the fateful night four years. In the crowded
nightclub, one of Amretta's brothers reportedly stepped on to a
friend of "Bullet" who took it as an insult. Infuriated, he left the
club and returned with a gun. When Amretta and her brothers and cousins left for
home in a
taxi, he and his
friends followed them. When they were getting off the
tax, a hooded "Bullet" confronted them. He fired seven shots, hitting Amretta in the stomach and mouth and causing her
death. The alleged killer's two accomplices are already in
jail. While 25-year-old Stenwick Hookumchand, who drove "Bullet"
home after the
crime, is behind
bars for seven years, 30-year-old Jayeganesh, who gave him the hood to disguise, got four years.--Indo-Asian
